About Us
Tegtmeier Polled Herefords began in 1949 with the purchase of registered Herefords. Clarence Tegtmeier, added more breeding stock from Gene and Jim Rowland, Frank and Les Robinson, Eugene Nesmith of State Line Farms, and Harold Junker of Bar 11 Polled Herefords. Other genetics that influenced the Tegtmeier herd in the early stages hailed from Orvil Kuhlmann & Sons, CK Mousel and Blanchard, and the Lindgren ranches.
Through the 1950s, Clarence Tegtmeier and Sons marketed to area farmers and ranchers by private treaty and consignment sales. It wasn’t until 1961 that a full-fledge registered cattle auction would take place on the farm. As a self-taught auctioneer, Clarence often assisted with farm and household sales in the area, which aided in launching the endeavor. Included in that initial sale were also commercial cattle from a couple of neighboring farmers and cousins. It was a success and went down in history as the inaugural event for an annual production sale that has continued for 60 consecutive years.
That first sale included 30 bulls, 20 cow/calf pairs and 35 yearling heifers, as well as 175 head of commercial steers and heifers. The 2nd sale took place in Virginia, NE, co-hosted with Alfred Henzel. Between Clarence and Alfred, 40 bulls and 20 females were sold by Neil (Tiny) Stinson of Hammond, OK. That same year (1962), Clarence and a couple of men from Beatrice, NE, decided to build a sale barn in Beatrice. Completed in November 1962, Beatrice 77 Sale Barn, under the management of Clarence, became the site for the annual production sale. Clarence’s brother Oscar, from Davenport, NE, and a cousin Erich from Burchard, NE, provided the consignments offered on Apr. 26, 1963, with the sale cried by Col. Charles Corkle, Norfolk, NE.
Throughout the ’60s and early ’70s, bulls from each producer left their marks. A bull named CT Rollo Hasford sold in the 1965 sale to Clifford and Jim Goff and eventually sired sons heading up herds in 12 states. One of those sons, Hazford Mixer, raised by Oscar, carried on the tradition siring his own sons that filtered out into several states to influence herds. Erich topped the 1970 sale with THF El Modest Lamp, whose sired calves showed at the National Western in Denver.
Erich and Verna dispersed their herd in 1975, but Clarence and Sons and Oscar and Sons continued sales together until 1995, when Oscar sold his last Herefords.
Extreme price swings in the ’70s and early ’80s, along with an influx of exotic breeds, affected the marketing of Hereford and Polled Hereford cattle. Still, outstanding sires continued to top the annual production sales. Bulls like J Beau Perfect 3, CT Perfect Hazford, EO Anx Roundup, DH Beau Rollo 43 1 and Square G Jaeger 29U proliferated the Hereford influence.
Sadly, on Nov. 19, 1983, Clarence passed away suddenly, while attending the National Polled Hereford Show in Lousiville, KY. Following his death, his three sons took over the cattle operation and continued the sales with their uncle, Oscar. Lower cattle prices plagued the ’80s. But towards the end of the decade, the market began to improve, and in 1988, the Tegtmeiers posted their best sale ever with an $1882 bull average that year.
In 1991, the sales moved to the Clarence Tegtmeier and Sons farm after 28 years at the Beatrice 77 Sale Barn. The move ushered in a decade of good cattle prices. Clarence’s brother Oscar sold his last Hereford cattle in the 1995 sale. In 1999, he received the Nebraska Polled Hereford Pioneer Breeder award.
From 1996 to the present, the sales have been under the management of Russ, Roger and Ron Tegtmeier — Clarence’s sons. As a team, they have marketed show champions like CT Farmer 114L, and several heifer calves have performed well for countless youth exhibitors in local, regional and national contests. TPH genetics in the form of live cattle and semen sales can be found in 34 states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.
Throughout the 62 years of marketing Tegtmeier Polled Herefords, the best reward has been the endless number of customers who became friends.
